Safe Baby Nursery Rooms & How to Create Them
By Sherrie Le Masurier
I’ve got some pretty good baby nursery decorating ideas in mind but what concerns me most is making sure my baby’s room is safe. Do you have safety tips geared for baby nursery rooms and toddlers?
It’s true we often invest more time decorating our baby’s room than considering safety needs. Safety is paramount whether you’re looking to outfit baby nursery rooms or redecorating the room of a toddler. Since kids grow fast it’s wise to always be one or two steps ahead of their development.
I know most child safety tips are simple common sense but sometimes we parents can benefit from thinking about the room from the child’s perspective and what they’re likely to do and become involved in if an opportunity presents itself.
We all know the importance of putting outlet covers on all the electrical outlets in baby nursery rooms and making sure there are no electrical cords dangling from dressers or table tops. Common sense also tells us it’s important to install child proof locks on all drawers and cabinet doors.
Many parents also know it’s wise to position your baby’s crib well away from any windows so she can’t climb out or get tangled in blind or shade cords. To be on the safe side, remove or tie up any looped cords that are attached.
But did you also know it’s important to install snap-on crib rail protectors to ensure your baby doesn’t swallow paint or varnish chips when she starts teething?
Following are more safety tips for baby nursery rooms:
- Keep your baby safe by selecting a crib with smooth edges and tight slants. Slats should be no more that 2 3/8 inches apart. (Always keep the side rails up, you never can tell when you baby will become more active.)
- Use a monitor to listen to the baby whenever you’re not in the room.
- Remove toys with any small parts your baby could swallow.
- Always double check nuts and bolts to make sure furniture pieces are assembled correctly.
- Make sure mobiles are well out of your baby’s reach.
As for creating safe toddler rooms follow the same basic safety guidelines outlined for safe baby nursery rooms but just step it up a notch.
- Use window guards to control how much the window can be opened.
- Make sure all lamps are safely out of reach.
- Position small out of reach slide locks on bi-fold doors to prevent opening and closing which can result in little fingers getting pinched.
- Use foam doorstops that fit over the top of conventional doors to prevent your child’s door from closing.
- Use one-piece doorjambs instead of ordinary doorjambs with removable parts. This avoids a potential choking hazard.
- Keep your toddler safely in bed with the help of bed rails.
- Consider a cool-to-the-touch night light in both baby nursery rooms and toddler rooms.
- Never run electrical cords under floor rugs or carpets. To prevent tripping, all cords should be neatly tucked away behind furniture.
- Place non-skid mats under area rugs.
- Bookcases and freestanding shelves should be anchored to the walls.
- Add safety hinges to your child’s toy box.
- Never put heavy toys on high shelves or dresser tops. Instead make sure all toys are safe and accessible.
- Doors should not have lockable door knobs.
Finally whether you’re considering the safety of baby nursery rooms or rooms of any child it’s important to always have a working smoke alarm just above the doorway.
