Boy Room Decor Ideas With A Sports Theme

By Sherrie Le Masurier

boy room decor My son loves sports of all kinds so I thought a sports theme would be a great idea for his bedroom. Do you have any boy room decor ideas that either centre around a particular sport or sports in general?

decorating boys rooms

For your young sport lover there are several great boy room decor touches you can do personalize his room.

Following are some of my favorite ideas for a boy room with a sports theme.

For the overall sports lover

Plaid wallpaper is a great backdrop for the bedroom of a young sports lover. One idea would be to use plaid wallpaper under a chair rail and then paint the top half of the walls in either a dark green, navy blue or cranberry depending on colors featured in the plaid. Or do it in reverse, with the paint on the bottom and the wallpaper on top. You could also use a decorative sports border or create a border of pennants instead of going with a plaid look.

Vintage sports

If your son loves sports but you don’t like the look of contemporary sports stuff, consider a vintage sports theme. Such a boy room theme is easily accomplished by searching out old sporting equipment from thrift shops and auctions and using a comforter or duvet cover which features things like classic baseball uniform pinstripes or basic colors like tan, hunter green, burgundy and dark blue.

Old fashioned felt pennants, a collection of used sports equipment, a display shelf of trophies and framed vintage team photos are some great boy room accessory ideas.

Baseball

What baseball player or fan wouldn’t love a baseball themed room with a headboard made from bats, curtains hung from bats (the bats become the curtain rods) and shelving that displays gloves, pennants and trophies? Find paint color inspiration in the colors of your son’s favorite team.

Basketball

If your son loves basketball paint his room in basketball colors and then turn his full into a cool basketball court by drawing on foul lines and adding a courtside bench. How about installing a locker or two for additional closet space? And don’t forget a basketball hoop even if it’s just to store his dirty laundry in.

Soccer

For your young soccer star, use black-and-white striped fabric as the basis of the boy room decor. You can carry the look of the ‘referee’ stripe throughout the room in the bed skirt, in the window treatments and in throw pillows.

Either put outgrown team uniforms or T-shirts on display or turn them in to novelty pillows. Simply stitch the neck and arm openings together and leave the shirttail edge open so it can be filled stuffed. Finally sew the remaining edge closed.

For more sport theme boy room decor ideas consider:

  • Displaying game balls in a net above your child's bed.
  • A basketball net hung over a laundry hamper.
  • Placing a throw or blanket in your child's favorite team colors at the foot of his bed or on an occasional chair.
  • A collage of sports trading cards and ticket stubs.
  • Using a traditional ‘school’ locker (available in specialty catalogs) as a durable bedside bookshelf.
  • A curtain rod with tennis or baseball finials.
  • Hanging favorite sports caps on an old painted ladder.
