Boy Room Theme Ideas

By Sherrie Le Masurier

boy room decorating

My 5 year old son has so many different interests I don’t have a clue where to begin to makeover his boy room. He’s always playing make believe – one day he’s off on a safari looking for wild animals and the next he’s either a cowboy or a pirate. Do you have any boy room theme ideas that would suit his interests?

decorating boy rooms

When it comes to boy room theme ideas the sky is the limit – no wonder you’re having difficulty settling on just one idea. Below please find some ideas on how to create a safari, western or pirate themed room. I have also offered up some different boy room theme ideas not to make your decision harder but to give you a variety of suggestions that will hopefully inspire some boy room ideas of your own.

Safari

For a safari look consider wild animal wallpaper on one wall or a decorative border complimented with some animal print fabrics.

For this boy room theme you may want to paint his walls in tan or ivory, or use a color from the wallpaper or decorative border. Or if you’re creative try your hand at painting a wild animal mural or purchase a ready-made one that depicts a safari adventure. Pillows and valances made from coordinating leopard print fabrics work well.

For a decorative touch consider creating a cosy corner with large stuffed lions and tigers and hanging items like a butterfly net, binoculars and a straw hat above your son’s bed.

Wild West

A young cowboy may enjoy a Wild West theme featuring dark navy or denim bedding, fun cow prints and throw cushions made out of old denim shirts or bandanas. Other ideas include displaying a cowboy hat, boots, chaps, plaid shirt and jean jacket. You could also decorate his boy room with tin stars and use a rope to border his walls. Check out second-hand shops for vintage posters featuring westerns. Create a valance by hanging a collection of bandanas over your son’s curtain rod.

Pirates

If your child loves Peter Pan or the Pirates of the Caribbean movie use the stories to inspire ideas for a pirate boy room theme. Consider blue ocean walls, a ship mast on one wall along with some fish netting and of course a toy box that resembles a treasure chest. Where possible create some portholes and secret hideaways to enhance the play value of your son’s room.

Play town

This boy room theme is a great idea for a young boy who loves exploring his local community. If you’re creative, paint a street scene or community map mural. If you opt for a local street scene highlight significant landmarks and give local shops names of family members e.g. Justin’s Car Wash, Jake’s Auto Shop, Chris’ Pet Shop etc.

Take photographs of your children doing various activities, like washing or working on the family car or walking or shampooing the family dog. Decorate your son’s walls with framed photos and add a play town activity mat to reinforce the theme.

Medieval Times

If your son is enthralled with knights and castles create a Medieval Times boy room theme that draws inspiration from stories like Camelot, The Sword in the Stone or from his favorite electronic game. If you’re artistic try you hand at faux painting castle walls and murals.

Construction zone

A construction zone motif is ideal for young boys who love playing in their sandbox with a variety of bulldozers and diggers. Wall treatment ideas include painting a mural that features bulldozers, backhoes and dump trucks, using a decorative wall border or framing actual building blueprints and hanging them on a mustard yellow wall accented with blue or green. Reusable wall stickers that relate to the construction theme are also an excellent boy room idea.

Accessory ideas for this boy room theme include dump truck drawer pulls, construction signs, a display shelf of small construction vehicles and a collection of hard hats hung on your son’s wall.
