Closet Design, Closet Organization And Closet Storage Tips For Kid Rooms

By Sherrie Le Masurier

closet design Do you have any closet design, closet organization or closet storage tips for kid rooms?

Closet organization When it comes to kid room closets, closet design, closet organization and closet storage systems all work hand in hand.

When planning the right closet design and storage system for your child you have to consider both her current and future needs. Research tells us that closet organization will give you up to 65% more storage space.

One of the most genuine excuses kids have for not hanging up their clothes is they can’t reach the rods. This is where a good closet design comes in. To encourage independence in your child she needs to be able to access her own clothing. This is done by incorporating a lower closet rod into the closet design.

For taller kids or teens don’t dismiss the idea of installing a second rod beneath the first to create double hang-up space. You may want to reserve the higher bar for ‘good’ clothes that are worn only on special occasions. For an inexpensive second rod consider using a broomstick with screw-in hooks on each end. Attach it to the upper rod with a chain and two ‘S’ hooks.

Another effective closet storage idea is to install shelves at child-accessible heights. This is ideal for bulky items like sweatshirts and sweaters. For easier access your child may prefer to store her jeans on a closet shelf instead of in a drawer.

Child-friendly hangers and bins are also great closet organization tools for clothing, socks, underwear and accessories.

Closet design is all about maximizing the existing space and incorporating a closet organization system that will work for your child.

In addition to shelving you may want to consider incorporating a series of hooks into the closet design. These hooks are ideal for everything from robes to jackets.

Plastic milk-type crates are among some of the best closet storage items on the market. To maximize space in your child’s closet consider stacking plastic crates on one side and hanging all tops and other short items just above.

On the other side where there are longer items like pants, skirts or dresses you could use just one or if you have room two crates positioned side by side. Alternatively you could use a short shoe rack in this area.

Take this closet organization idea one step further and purchase ready made tower shelving. Similar to the crate idea tower shelving is a one piece unit that’s ideal for storing sweaters, sweatshirts, pajamas, jeans or any other items that require folding.

Another closet storage alterative is a hanging sweater bag. Usually made of canvas, this kind of bag hangs from the rod itself and is a great closet organization tool that can be folded up for travel purposes. Depending on the length and the number of sections your bag has you may have room on the closet floor for a couple of bins, baskets, crates, or shoe racks.

Another great closet organization tool similar to a canvas sweater bag is the seven day organizer that comes with seven shelf-like pockets. These bags also hang from the closet rod and are ideal for storing individual outfits – one for each day of the week.

Other closet organization ideas include grouping your child’s clothing by color. Ask your child if she would like her clothes grouped by color e.g. pink T-shirts with pink dresses or by groups like school clothes and play clothes. Or maybe she would like to keep unlike things separate. One grouping for T-shirts, one for dresses, one for skirts and so on.

The same group closet organization method can be used for all the other items in the closet – shoes, baseball caps, bags etc. If she doesn’t find a particular grouping system to her liking she can always opt to change it later on.

As mentioned previously, a good closet design involves making the most of your child’s closet and utilizing every inch of the space. So when you think of closet storage or closet organization also think inside and outside of the closet. Consider how valuable a closet door can be for hanging things. Over the door hangers and shoe bags are ideal organizational tools to incorporate.

When starting a closet design concept from scratch you want to think of your child’s closet as a box and outfit it as you deem appropriate.

If your child currently needs very little space for hanging her clothing, you may want to enhance the closet storage space by installing a versatile unit with adjustable shelves, drawers and rods that will maximize the usable space yet gives her flexibility should her needs change.

Another closet design idea is to build removable shelves on one end of your child’s closet. For young kids such a closet storage system would allow them to keep their everyday items like toys and games on a low shelf. As your children grow the lower shelves can be used for footwear.

So as you can see closet design, closet organization and closet storage ideas all work hand in hand to create a closet system that works to your child’s advantage.
