Flipping through a decorating magazine or book is a great place to start. Follow that with a trip to your local paint and paper store and your mind will be flowing with the latest and greatest ideas for kid playrooms. Decorating child playrooms can be a fun activity you can share with your child once you have the inspiration. To inspire you here are some of my favorite ideas for kid play rooms. Please note that when it comes to decorating child playrooms, the rooms can be as simple or as complicated as you want. Spending a ton of money and countless hours hand painting a wall mural isn’t necessary. The key is to strike a happy balance between what you and your child desire, what works within your budget and what can be created within the project time frame. Flooring Ceramic or vinyl tiles are ideal for craft areas and area rugs can be added to make activities like putting together floor puzzles or building skyscrapers more comfortable. You can also use colored tiles to designate certain activities in the room e.g. blue tiles under your child’s painting easel and red tiles under her dress up area. Other ideas for decorating child playrooms include creating roadways with different colored tiles or have tiles custom cut into interesting shapes. Make a fun carpeted floor by visiting a carpet retailer and asking if you can purchase strips cut from other installations. With a variety of different colored and textured sections you should be able to come up with an interest design for little money. Another floor option for kid playrooms would be to paint old hardwood flooring in such a way that it works with the theme of the room or highlights each individual activity area using words or related illustrations. Walls Wall treatments for kid playrooms should be simple and easy to clean. Following are some of my favorite wall finishes. Semi-gloss latex paint is great for everything from walls and doors to window frames and shelves. All you need is a soapy cloth and the paint is easily cleaned. Washable wallpaper is also a great alternative. Kid playrooms can be divided using wallpaper on the top half and paint on the bottom. Or use a washable wallpaper border instead and position it in the center of the wall. Blackboard paint is another good idea when it comes to decorating child playrooms. This type of paint is ideal for covering one or more exposed walls. Further, it gives children the opportunity to really express themselves. If you’re creative you may want to try your hand at painting a mural or stencilling. Both are great for brightening up an otherwise dull room. Both mural and stencils can be used to tell a story and often inspire things to talk about with your child. Not so artistic when it comes to decorating child playrooms? How about a using reusable wall stickers? They come in all shapes and sizes. These too can be fashioned into a story and because they are removable, the story can be altered as your child sees fit. Play Room Furniture Playing often involves moving things around to meet the activity needs of the moment. As a result, play room furniture should be lightweight and easy to move. When thinking of play room furniture think plastic, inflatable and bean bag. Heavy wooden furniture is great for painting and bringing some color into your child’s room but is not very functional when it comes to regular room alterations. The same goes for decorative accessories like lamps and freestanding picture frames which can be easily knocked over and become broken. The bottom line is that playroom furniture needs to be versatile. That said, there is merit in having some large pieces of furniture in kid playrooms that offer comfort and will remain stationary. Take for instance, that old sofa you were thinking of getting rid of. If there’s room in the playroom put it in there as a comfy spot for impromptu naps or if there’s a TV in the room for cuddling up and watching a movie. Some simple sheets in a color that matches the room can turn an eye sore into a complementary piece of furniture. Further, if snacks or drinks happen to spill the sheet can be easily laundered. As you can see kid playrooms can be anything you desire. Decorating child playrooms is all about personal choice and creating an environment that’s fun and versatile.
