Storybook If your child likes storybooks like Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit consider creating a whole room around her favorite book. One of the best and easiest ways to do this is to select a main color from the storybook to use on the walls, in the bedding and as window treatments. Sometimes you can find related decorative borders, speciality sheets or fabrics or you can frame book illustrations and cut out pictures to decoupage on furniture. A display of soft storybook characters on your daughter’s bed or a collection of character items on a nearby shelf can also be a focal point of her girl room.
Fairies What little girl wouldn’t love a room decorated with fairies? To create such a girl room theme start with pretty pinks, soft blues and lovely lavender shades. Think sheers for the window treatment and airy canopy beds. Kid room decorating retailers offer a variety of related wallpaper, decorative borders and bedding. Reusable fairy stickers placed around the room further tie her girl room theme together. A display featuring a set of fairy wings, a sparkling wand (both available in most dollar stores) and some fairy dust (a clear plastic jar with silver glitter) is a nice touch. For safety sake, glue the fairy dust lid on so your child doesn’t get glitter everywhere including in her eyes. Encourage her to make believe and sprinkle invisible dust instead.
Princess For a princess theme room, think pretty pink, sheer fabrics and lots of gems. You can opt for a Disney princess inspired theme and find lots of matching accessories or you can create a more generic princess room using various shades of pink and silver accents. Solid colors work better than patterns in this kind of girl room. The key to pulling off a regal princess feel is to use soft and flowing fabrics for window treatments, decorative pillows and as a bed skirt. Pink ruffles and faux fur trim on girl room decor items like frames, lampshades and to border bulletin boards are also a good idea. Other ideas include spray painting frames silver, gluing on some gemstones, and creating a dress-up area with a wall length mirror.
Ballerina I have yet to meet an aspiring ballerina who wouldn’t love to have her very own ballet themed room complete with a dancer’s barre. The background color of this girl room theme could be a gentle pink with a main wall supporting a dancer’s barre. To make a barre all you need is railing brackets and a closet rod for the bar (available in hardware stores). Please note hardwood flooring is best for this type of room but you can also install inexpensive wood floor tiles right on top of your child’s wall-to-wall carpet surrounding her barre to give her a smooth place to practice. Another option would be to create a raised stage area with hardwood flooring and mount a spotlight on the ceiling so it shines down on your daughter as she dances. A decorative border or a stencil featuring ballet shoes in a deeper pink would help to bring this girl room theme idea together. Plain blinds or shades could be topped with pink netting wrapped loosely around a curtain rod. White painted pegs would be ideal for displaying dance outfits on pretty hangers or ballet shoes tied with pretty ribbon. If your daughter doesn’t have any outgrown outfits or shoes to display consider purchasing some at local resale shops to use for decorative purposes.
Paper dolls A paper doll theme is a great do-it-yourself idea for little girls. You can make your own wall border by cutting out a simple paper doll chain from a roll of pretty but plain wallpaper border. Try not to crease it too much and use a sharp X-acto knife to cut out the dolls. Another great idea is to create a border using individual paper doll clothes. You can print an awesome collection from online sources or have a selection of paper outfits sent by mail. For some fun girl room wall art, display paper dolls and pretty outfits in decorative frames or decoupage them on your child’s furniture. The Internet is a great source of paper doll stickers and dolls that will inspire various themes like Alice in Wonderland. Keep the rest of her girl room simple with one main color and feminine fabric pattern.
