Following are a list of guidelines to consider when decorating a kid bathroom from scratch or if you’re simply looking to enhance your existing kid bathroom decor with a new kid bathroom accessory. Share ideas. Sit down with your child or children and ask if they have any particular ideas for their bathroom. If it’s a single kid bathroom that opens into her bedroom you may wish to co-ordinate it with her existing environment. Start with a neutral decor. This could be tan, off white or possibly something in a light blue or soft green. The idea behind going neutral is that it gives you a good base that will grow with your child. Use gloss or semi-gloss paint specially formulated for use in bathrooms. Add color and personality. You can incorporate kid bathroom decor elements that take into account your child’s changing interests and styles by adding some accent colors and patterns but be selective especially if the space is small. Kid bathroom accessory items that can be easily changed are best. Select easy care wall coverings like tiles and vinyl wallpaper. Incorporate fabrics. If you have shower or tub doors you can bring some fabric into your child’s kid bathroom by adding curtains or a window valance. If you don’t, you can purchase a ready-made shower curtain that matches your selected paint color or do it in reverse and select your child’s shower curtain first and then her paint color. Alternatively if you’re handy with a sewing machine, purchase some fabric and make your own shower curtain. Hem up the top and bottom and add grommets to hold the curtain rings. Window treatments. For privacy in a kid bathroom consider lined shades or vertical blinds with a simple fabric valance that matches your child’s shower curtain. Co-ordinating the room. Paint cabinet handles or purchase speciality drawer pulls to bring your kid room decor together. Color-code towels and kid bathroom accessory items if more than one child will be using the bathroom. Towel rings or racks. Speaking of towels, they should be easily accessible and positioned at a height that best suits your child. To enhance your child’s kid bathroom decor, towels can be easily personalized by cutting letters from of your shower curtain fabric and applying them with an appliqué stitch on your sewing machine or by using fusible backing. Give plain tiles a new look. Decorative tiles are a great kid bathroom accessory. You can easily dress up existing tiles using sponge stamps. All you have to do is decide on a simple shape and then create a paper template. Place your template over a sponge and cut it out with either a utility knife or a pair of scissors. Next, clean your tiles with soap and water and then apply some alcohol to remove any soap residue. Dry completely. Dip the sponge into paint and press gently on the tile. Lift the sponge back off carefully. Once all your freshly sponged tiles are dry apply a polyurethane finish. Non-slip bath mats. For your child’s safety be sure the bath mat has a non-slip backing. Another good way to enhance your kid bathroom decor is to select a bath mat that ties in with the other colors and patterns used elsewhere in the bathroom. A safe step stool. Young children will need a sturdy stool to reach the sink. You can opt for either plastic or a wood one that can be decorated to match your child’s kid bathroom.
