Kid Room Design Basics

Kid Room Design Do you have any kid room design ideas that will grow along with my eight year old son?

Kid Room DesignComing up with the right kid room design for your child is easy once you understand the basic elements of scale, proportion, line and balance. You also need to consider the harmony and rhythm of the space and take into account his particular interests now.

You want a kid room design that is both pleasing to the eye and practical for his lifestyle.

Scale
Scale is all about how the size of one thing relates to the size of other things in the room.

Proportion
The term ‘proportion’ refers to how objects relate to each other based on size.

Line
Line is what defines and shapes the room. Horizontal or curved lines can make the space seem soft and peaceful while vertical and diagonal lines can send a bolder more powerful message.

Balance
The even placement of belongings is what balance is all about. A kid room design can have a symmetrical or asymmetrical balance.

By applying the above concepts along with a little harmony and rhythm you will be able to play up the room’s best attributes.

Harmony
Harmony comes into play once you have established an overall theme or motif.

Rhythm
Unlike harmony which pulls your kid room design together, rhythm helps your eye move naturally around the room. Rhythm is essentially a repetition of pattern or shape carried throughout the room.

So know that you understand the basic kid room design elements it’s time to grab a pencil and notepad and start brainstorming.

With you pencil and paper in hand walk through the room and jot down things you like and don’t like about the space.

For instance does the room seem too small or too large for your child’s needs? Are there any challenging features like a slopped ceiling you need to incorporate into your kid room design?

If you plan to use the existing furnishings in the revamped space is it of proper scale? What about furniture arrangement – are you limited to how you can arrange things based on the number of doors and windows you have to contend with?

You’ll also want to explore how light or dark the room is at different times of the day.

Another important thing to consider is storage space. Is there enough of it? If not, what types of organizing systems can you incorporate into your kid room design?

In your initial room walk about you may be dismayed at the number of physical limitations the room has but don’t let any drawbacks get the best of you. Turn any negative aspects into positives by allowing them to inspire an even better kid room design.
