Bedroom Themes For Shared Rooms

By Sherrie Le Masurier

bedroom themes Do you have any unisex bedroom theme ideas for my five year old twins who share a bedroom?

decorating shared bedrooms

First off, I’m assuming you have a boy and girl. The following carousel, animal, color, nautical, jungle, rainforest, and sea world ideas would be appropriate for young children of either sex.

Carousel

A carousel theme is a fun way to decorate your children’s shared room if they love riding on carousels.

One of the best ways to introduce a carousel theme is to paint animals or use cut out wallpaper animals at varying heights on your children’s walls.

Room colors should be bright and happy. Painted furniture works well in this kind of room as does decorative drawer pulls and decoupage embellishments.

Simple roll down shades with a scalloped edge and solid colored window toppers work well.

A mesh canopy hung from a screw eye and accessorized with colorful ribbons or a carousel mobile and some carousel themed accessories on a display shelf would create a nice focal point.

Favorite animals

An animal themed room is ideal for children who love animals and always want to learn more about a particular pet or wild animal.

Incorporate lots of stuffed animals and related posters. Other good ideas include using animal prints on your children’s bed and in window treatments. You may also want to create some footprints on her wall using a simple hand-drawn stencil.

Many wildlife books offer samples of animal footprints. Use these samples to inspire your own design which can be cut out of a transparent sheet of plastic and turned into a stencil.

Favorite color

If your children both share a favorite color (which is often the case with twins), consider using various shades of it around their shared room.

Paint the walls of their shared room in their favorite color then use a coordinating border and fabric in a different shade. The key is to use various patterns and textures in the same color to bring the bedroom theme together.

You might also want to introduce an accent color in small amounts to provide a little contrast. For instance what about green or red trim on blue toss cushions or incorporating a little green or red in your children’s bedding, window treatments or in a rug print?

An accent color can also be used on picture frames, as curtain tie backs and in other kid room accessories items like storage baskets and waste paper cans.

Fun colors

Another good shared room idea would be to create a fun color theme by starting with a bright and lively area rug. Then use the colors and any designs in the rug to inspire ideas for the rest of your children’s room.

Fun ideas include painting every shelf in their bookcase a different color. The same technique can be used on headboard slats, drawer fronts, and chair legs.

Then find a fabric to compliment the rug and use it for window valances and throw pillows.

Before you know it, your use of repeated colors will bring the entire room together. Just be sure not to over do it with too many different colors. A total of three colors and one main pattern, works best in this type of room.

Nautical and nice

Nautical themes are ideal for both girls and boys. Boys tend to prefer a room heavy on sailboats and lighthouses, while most girls seem to prefer fresh airy spaces with seashells and beach related accessories.

Large seashells and big pieces of coral make great book ends. For a unique lamp idea purchase a Mason jar lamp from a country gift shop or made your own with a do-it-yourself kit and fill it with items like shells, starfish, sea horses and coral. Hang some fishing net on your children’s wall (available in outdoor shops or Army-Navy type stores).

Jungle fun

What adventurous young Tarzan or Jane wouldn’t feel at home in a jungle room?

You can set the stage by painting your children’s walls green, adding a jungle mural and animal or leafy prints as bedding and window coverings.

Paint a second-hand dresser with a mix of animal prints or add painted knobs to an otherwise plain one. Trim your child’s bookcase with bamboo (available at most garden or home centres, split it lengthwise and affix with wood glue).

Other theme ideas include covering a bookcase with grass-cloth wallpaper and then edging the shelves with artificial vines (available in most dollar stores). For accessories think pegs or hooks that display jungle gear like binoculars or a pith helmet.

Rain forest

Create a fun rain forest room by using a tropical mural as a backdrop or adding a decorative jungle border.

Fabric snakes, colorful stuffed birds, and artificial trees add to the look of the shared room as does a butterfly mobile, and reusable wall stickers.

Trim your child’s bookcase with bamboo (available at most garden or home centres, split it lengthwise and affix with wood glue).

Other ideas include covering a bookcase with s grass-cloth wallpaper and then edging the shelves with artificial vines (available in most dollar stores). Use bamboo or straw blinds on your children’s window and wooden beaded curtains on their closet.

Sea World

If your children love tropical fish, dolphins and starfish consider creating a Sea World room by turning your children’s shared room into one huge aquarium (figuratively speaking of course). You can use a ready-made wall mural or paint your own featuring favorite fish and sea animals along with coral, seaweed and a beach complete with sandcastles.

Each child’s side of the shared room could be tailored to his or her particular interests e.g. you could put a Little Mermaid poster next to your daughter’s bed and hang some decorative tropical fish from the ceiling above your son’s.

For a cool window treatment use a plain shade under a clear vinyl shower curtain (trim to fit with pinking shears).

For room colors think blue, aqua and coral. Also give some thought to adding a real aquarium with an interior light that can be left on at night.
