Toddler Room Decorating Ideas

By Sherrie Le Masurier

toddler room q I'm looking to create a fun yet safe toddler room for my son. Do you have any decorating ideas that would be age appropriate?

toddler room decorating ideas A When it comes to toddler room decorating ideas you've come to the right place. At Organizing and Decorating Kids Rooms we believe a child's bedroom makeover can be a fun and rewarding experience. The key is to have a plan and approach the project with an eye toward the future.

While a toddler room may be the second time you're created a special space for your son it is only now that you're looking at the kinds of furnishings that will grow with your child. Whether you're planning to invest in a complete set of new furniture or are looking for a couple of select furniture pieces give some thought to how long your toddler will be able to use his room theme it before it needs replacing.

For instance, toddler beds and the variety of coordinating toddler bedding that's on the market these days is fantastic however, if you're on a budget we recommend one of two things - either you borrow a toddler bed and simply re-use you child's crib mattress and bedding or opt for a twin bed now.

Kid-sized furniture in a toddler room is great but if you aren't planning on having more children it may not be a wise investment.

There are however many budget friendly toddler room decorating ideas that are both size and age appropriate.

Toddlers are active, fun, and creative and as a result, you need to create an environment that will withstand all that they can dish out.

At this age, kids love to creatively express themselves through artistic pursuits like drawing on walls and imaginative play which may include climbing on furniture. Any toddler room decorating ideas should take into account durability as well as safety. Consider things like using chalkboard paint or whiteboard material on the bottom half of your toddler's walls and bolting furniture to the floor and/or the wall.

When deciding on a paint color, give some thought to the type of paint as well. Washable walls are a must if your child will be doing more than just sleeping in his toddler room. If you're looking to create a toddler room that will stand the test of time, we recommend a non age specific theme such as a floral, sports or butterfly toddler room. If your toddler has a particular fascination with dinosaurs, fire trucks, construction, planes and trains, princesses, mermaids, tea parties etc. then we suggest you explore a theme room decor items from a company such as Olive Kids.

If your toddler is more into trendy characters like Bob the Builder then consider what products are available and how best to incorporate them - but don't go overboard. A toddler room should be a safe haven for your child. Aim for a room that's comfortable and cozy but not jammed packed with stuff. A well laid out room with one or two colors, matching bedding, a wall border, and curtains is ideal. The odd other decor accessory can complement the room nicely but too many decor items (especially in a small toddler room) does little to create a peaceful haven. Too much stuff is simply overwhelming and will stimulate instead of comfort your child at bedtime.

If you take a simple approach with any toddler room decorating ideas you have you'll find that a good part of the room can be easily updated when your child's tastes change and it won't result in a large hit to your pocketbook.

Start by picking out some bedding that features a color, pattern or design that coordinates with your overall toddler room theme. Reversible comforters are a great ideal as they offer up variety. If you do select a reversible comforter take both sides into consideration when matching other decor items like curtains, area rugs, wall art, lampshades etc.

If you're on a budget but desire a trendy toddler room opt for popular yet inexpensive bedding along with a select few accessories like a throw pillow, throw rug, poster, removable wall border, set of wall stickers and/or decorative drawer pulls to bring the theme together. Keep paint color(s), furniture, lighting, storage containers, and flooring basic so you can easily update your toddler room decor with little expense.
